Taking Good Care of Our Reputation

(May 2007)

Narration

I just arrived home and was about to get sleep after my 36 hrs. duty when one of our new neighbor came. She was asking for consultation regarding her father who had loss of consciousness. I was very tired at that time. I was about to ask my mother to tell her that I was not around and they can bring the patient to the nearest hospital. But deep inside, it’s hard for me to say these so I examined the patient.

I reviewed the history of a 60-year- old male who initially had complaint of nape pain. He just went to the comfort room to defecate. His daughter accidentally saw him unconscious. The patient is previously diagnosed with Hypertension Stage II poorly controlled. They cannot bring the patient to the nearest hospital due to financial constraints. Further physical examination of the patient suggest Cerebrovascular Accident secondary to hypertension.

I explained the condition of the patient to the relatives. I told them the need to bring him to the hospital. I even accompanied the patient to the nearest public hospital.

After endorsing the patient to the attending physician, I waved goodbye to my new neighbors. They were very thankful to me.

Insight: (Physical, Psychosocial, Ethical) (Discovery, Stimulus, Reinforcement)

In this narration, I was given the option of entertaining or not entertaining the patient. The patient was just new in our place, deprived of financial capabilities and nowhere to go. I was known in our neighborhood as a kind doctor who extends consultations and services without expecting something in return.

I don’t want them to have the connotation that I’m selective in terms of extending my services. In this way, I’m taking good care of my reputation.

Reputation is the opinion (more technically, a social evaluation) of the public toward a person, a group of people, or an organization. It is something that should be guided.

When someone in need comes asking for our help, let us not hesitate on extending our hand to them for the rewards of life comes in many ways.
