“Care of” Patients (June 2007)
Narration
It was one Tuesday morning and I was assigned at the out- patient department. I went there at exactly 8:30 am. While I was on my way, an employee of the hospital approached me if I can examine her nephew with an inguinal mass. I told them to have the name listed and I will examine him. As I was following the sequence of names in order of first come first serve basis, the employee approached me if I can examine her nephew right away. Since she is my friend, I granted her request.
Afterwards, I continued giving consultations to the patients. Again, another employee approached me and asked for the same favor. But this time, I explained to them that they have to wait for their turn. The patients who came in earlier were already asking why those who came in late were entertained first. I simply told them that all of them will be given a chance to be seen by a doctor.
Insight: (Physical, Psychosocial, Ethical) (Discovery, Stimulus, Reinforcement)
There is indeed a certain point in our life wherein we tend to please all the people all the time. But sometimes no matter how much effort you have exerted, it is really impossible to make them all satisfied. What is more important is that you really gave your best to make them all happy despite different status in life, religion or any partition.
With regards to the question of up to when are we going to tolerate prioritizing c/o patient, it depends upon the doctor. The decision of the physician can be affected by a lot of factors: seniority, virtue of pakikisama and utang na loob, brotherhood, and other factor’s.
Some points to ponder with regards to c/o patients:
c/o patients should have a chart from the OPD waiting for their turn to be called OPD patients should be entertained at the OPD and not along hallways or at the ER. During operations, emergency cases should be given priority than elective c/o patients. |
